{"id":5,"date":"2012-01-02T08:21:52","date_gmt":"2012-01-02T08:21:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/john.ranola.org\/?page_id=5"},"modified":"2019-01-21T00:17:12","modified_gmt":"2019-01-21T08:17:12","slug":"about-me","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/john.ranola.org\/","title":{"rendered":"About Me"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/john.ranola.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/ranola_john_IMG_9486.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-80\" title=\"My Picture\" src=\"https:\/\/john.ranola.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/ranola_john_IMG_9486.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"125\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>I am currently a Research Scientist\/Statistician working in the Department of Laboratory Medicine at the University of Washington under Dr. Brian Shirts.\u00a0 Previously I did a postdoc in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stat.washington.edu\/\">Department of Statistics at UW<\/a> under the tutelage of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stat.washington.edu\/thompson\/\">Professor Elizabeth Thompson<\/a>\u00a0the former President-Elect of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biometricsociety.org\/\">International Biometric Society<\/a> and prior to that I was a graduate student in the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biomath.ucla.edu\/\">Department of Biomathematics at UCLA<\/a>\u00a0under Professor\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biomath.ucla.edu\/faculty\/klange\/klange.htm\">Kenneth Lange<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>My research focuses on analyzing biological data though much of my recent work focuses on genetics.\u00a0 Some of my current work involves classifying variants of uncertain significance in clinical pedigrees and I had a major role in the <a href=\"http:\/\/analyze.myvariant.org\/\">AnalyzeMyVariant<\/a> website.\u00a0 Previously, I have worked with genetic data focusing on spatial structure. \u00a0Specifically, I a studied using an organism&#8217;s genetic information to place them onto the geographic map. \u00a0For more information see my paper in Bioinformatics \u00a0on &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25012181\">Fast Spatial Ancestry via Flexible Allele Frequency Surfaces<\/a>&#8221; and the associated R-package <a href=\"https:\/\/r-forge.r-project.org\/R\/?group_id=1944\">OriGen on R-forge<\/a>. \u00a0Additionally I have done work on high dimensional spatial and network datasets using elements from graph theory (mainly random, weighted, or directed graphs), probability\u00a0modeling, the Minorization-Maximization (MM) algorithm, and an extension of graph theory that I helped to develop called random multigraph theory. \u00a0For information on random multigraphs see my papers &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/bioinformatics.oxfordjournals.org\/content\/early\/2010\/06\/16\/bioinformatics.btq309\">A Poisson Model for Random Multigraphs<\/a>&#8221; and also &#8220;<a title=\"Cluster and Propensity based approximation of a network\" href=\"http:\/\/www.biomedcentral.com\/1752-0509\/7\/21\/\">Cluster and propensity based approximation of a network<\/a>&#8221; with the associated R-package <a href=\"http:\/\/cran.r-project.org\/web\/packages\/PropClust\/index.html\">PropClust on cran<\/a>. \u00a0Although my research has focused mainly on the analysis of genetic networks, including the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/omim\">Online Mendelian Inheritance of Man<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thebiogrid.org\/\">BioGRID<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hprd.org\/\">Human Protein Reference Databases<\/a>, it is applicable to many areas. \u00a0Among others, I have analyzed datasets in literature, business, social networks, disease relationships, and money flow.<\/p>\n<p>I am also interested in optimization, algorithms, parallel computing using GPU&#8217;s, and computational and statistical genetics.<\/p>\n<p>I am looking for a job in Statistical Genetics, Computational Genetics, Biostatistics, Bioinformatics, or Computational Biology around Portland, OR or Seattle, WA. \u00a0If you have a job opening or would like more information on my research\u00a0please feel free to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/john.ranola.org\/?page_id=12\">contact me<\/a>\u00a0or <a title=\"Curriculum Vitae\" href=\"https:\/\/john.ranola.org\/?page_id=17\">see my Curriculum Vitae<\/a>. \u00a0Thank you!<\/p>\n<p>Some interesting facts about me:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I have played on a national soccer team and challenged other national teams including South Korea and Ghana.<\/li>\n<li>I placed in the scored 8 points in the infamous <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Lowell_Putnam_Mathematical_Competition\">Putnam Competition<\/a>, a 6 hour voluntary college math test where the median score is often 0 out of 120 points.<\/li>\n<li>I have experienced a direct <a href=\"http:\/\/articles.latimes.com\/1993-08-09\/news\/mn-22018_1_tropical-storm\">8.1 earthquake<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Typhoon_Paka\">typhoon Paka<\/a> with 185 mph gusts, and the ash fall from the eruption of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mount_Pinatubo\">Mt.
